Harmful Drug Use

Many substances or drugs have intoxicating effects that lead to them being misused and causing harmful effects. Some substances are sold or manufactured illegally while some are produced legally, but used for unintended purposes. eg: - Cocaine and MDMA

Effects of different harmful drugs on the body.


Cocaine

A white powder stimulant that is normally snorted or rubbed into the gums.

Side effects can include:

  • make your heart beat faster

  • raise your body temperature – so you feel hot

  •  stop you feeling hungry

  • make you feel sick

  •  make you need to poo

  • make you anxious and panicky

  •  make you paranoid

  • make you so confident that you do things you wouldn’t normally do (which might be risky).

Heroin

A powerful opiate that’s usually sold as a white or brown powder.

                                                                                       Side effects can include:

  • Euphoria

  • A dry mouth

  • Warm, flushed skin

  • Arms and legs that feel heavy

  • Upset stomach and vomiting

  • Itching

  • A fuzzy brain


Weed

Weed also known as Cannabis is a plant-based drug. It can be smoked, eaten or vaped. 

Side effects can include:

  • Heighten your senses (colors might seem brighter and sounds might seem louder)

  • Distort your sense of time

  • Hurt your motor skills and make driving more dangerous

  •  Lower your inhibitions so you may have risky sex or take other chances

MDMA

A recreational/club drug taken as ecstasy pills or as MDMA powder.

                                                                              Side effects can include:

  • dilated pupils

  • tingling sensations

  •  tightening or moving of the jaw muscles (gurning)

  •  raised body temperature

  • a faster heartbeat and nausea

Turning Point provides a flexible treatment and support service for people over 18, seeking support for drug and/or alcohol use, with a focus on recovery and community reintegration. Our team includes Prescribers, Doctors, Nurses, HCA, Recovery workers, Peer mentors & Volunteers, who will support you throughout your journey.

U-TURN

U-Turn is a specialist service that provides support, help and guidance to young people (and their families) who have alcohol and/or drug-related problems. The service encompasses all illicit substances, solvents and prescribed medication but excludes the use of tobacco.

It works proactively in preventing drug use and providing education to children and young people, and provides training and consultancy for professionals on how to work with young people they have concerns about, and which are related to the misuse of alcohol and substances.
